What do Auto Service Techs do? Automotive service technicians use their high-tech skills to inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles and light trucks. A career as a diesel service technician or mechanic can offer relatively high wages and the challenge of skilled repair work. Small engine mechanics repair and service power equipment ranging from racing motorcycles to chain saws. Due to the increasing complexity of automotive, diesel, and small engines, most employers prefer to hire mechanics who have graduated from formal technician training programs. Automotive and Diesel service technician employment is expected to grow at an average rate through the year 2015. Auto Mechanic is one of U.S. News and World Report "100 Best Jobs of 2013."

Education and Training: College and trade school automotive technician training programs usually provide intensive career preparation through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practice. Colleges update their curriculums frequently to reflect changing technology and equipment. Some trade and technical school programs provide concentrated training for 6 months to a year, depending on how many hours the student attends each week, and upon completion, award a certificate. College programs usually award a certificate or an associate degree.
