Search Tips
In making your selection, there are many criteria that
you will use to narrow your search. Some of these may be the degrees
that are offered, the cost of tuition, size of the student enrollment,
how difficult the admission requirements are, the availability of financial
aid, the accreditation, and the geographic location of the institution,
to name a few.
"Location"
If you are a resident of the state where you will be
attending, you can expect your tuition to be lower. "In-State" tuition
is equal to or less than "Out-of-State" tuition, and can make a significant
difference in where you can financially afford to attend. You may be able
to attend in the same city where you live; maybe live at home and save the "Room
and Board" expenses.
You may be more comfortable with the culture of your home state, or on the other hand, you may want to get away from home, and experience new areas of the country. Consider whether you want a rural setting or an urban setting.
"Enrollment"
The "Enrollment", the size of the student body, presents
many advantages and disadvantages, depending on the background and goals
of the student.
Some students may look forward the a large, diverse student body. Large institutions may offer more activities, more specialized courses, more opportunities to do graduate research. Often large institutions have better national recognition, and so your resume may be more attractive to some employers after you graduate.
Smaller institutions may be more comfortable for students from smaller towns. They may offer a more relaxed social life, an opportunity to know the teaching staff, smaller classes, and more personal attention.
"Tuition"
The "Tuition" shown is the last reported annual "In-State"
tuition and fees for a full-time student. "Board" is usually an extra expense. The more "course credits" you take each year, expect a higher tuition.
"Type"
You can expect "Public" institutions (usually supported
by state taxes) to have lower tuition and other expenses. The vast majority of "degree-offering" institutions are public institutions.
"Private" institutions are typically smaller. Some are supported by religious organizations.
"Years"
If you are interested in a Bachelor's Degree or higher,
select "4 Year." If you are interested in an Associates Degree, select "2 Year." If you are looking for vocational training, you would probably select "Less than 2 Year".
"Accredited"
Most of the larger institutions and many community colleges
are accredited. If you are planning on transferring later, you should have little problem transferring course credits between accredited institutions. Few vocational schools are accredited, and then generally by specialized agencies.
Keeping your Profile

Vocational and Trade Schools Generally these have smaller enrollments. Most have "2 Year Degree" or "Less than 2 Year" programs. Tuitions are low. You may get better search results by making these selections.
Community Colleges Most larger Community Colleges are accredited. Enrollments may be from a few hundred students to more than 10,000. Most are "2 Year Degree". Tuition is typically $1000 - $2000 for "in-state" students.
4-Year Colleges and Universities Most larger Colleges and Universities are accredited. Enrollments may be from a few thousand to more than 30,000. For public institutions, tuition is typically $2000 - $3000 for "in-state" students; and $6000 - $7000 for out-of-state students. Private institutions have the same tuition for in-state and out-of state students. Nonprofit institution tuition will average $9000 - $11,000. Nonprofit institutions often have a religious affiliation. Private for-profit institution tuition will be $6000 - $8000.
Making Enrollment and Tuition Selections Some institutions, particularly smaller and non-accredited ones, have not responded with their current Enrollment and Tuition data. Since this data is unknown to us, we have reported it in our Database as "---" or "$---". You may see "$---" for the Tuition. This means the Tuition may really be outside the range you selected, but we have no way of knowing. At least you know there is a possibility they are in your selected range.
Room and Board Some institutions, particularly smaller and non-accredited ones, have not responded with their current Room and Board. Since this data is unknown to us, we have reported it in our Database as "$---". Dormitory facilities (Room) will typically be $2000 - $3000 for 4-Year institutions, and $1000 - $3000 for 2-Year institutions, with private for-profit institutions having the high charges. The meal plan (Board) if offered, will typically be $1000 - $2500.
Data That Comes Back "---" or "$---" As explained above, some institutions have not responded with their current data. Since this data is unknown to us, you may see it reported as "---" or "$---". When you see this, at least know there is a possibility these institutions fit your selected Profile. You may want to contact the institutions directly for more information.
"No Matches Found" This means that for the selections you made, there were no matches. Try selecting a career field that is close to the one you are looking for. Also, try changing your selections of Enrollment, Tuition, and other values.
